On the 4th of August I was invited to Pro-Balance Health a personal training studio in Manchester for a taster PT session with the owner Andy Jeffries. The studio is on Jackson's Row just off Albert Square, I confessed to Andy as soon as I arrived that I'd never seen it in my 8 years of working in the city centre even though these guys have been operating there for 17 years now.
So, a little bit about Andy. He's got over 17 years experience within the fitness industry so of course he knows his stuff. He even mentioned some celebs he's worked with and frankly if its good enough for them its good enough for me.
As soon as I walked in I instantly liked the place, the space isn't enormous and I really liked that. It's kitted out better than most gym's I've seen and they've made brilliant use of the space they have. There's something reassuring about a PT session minus the audience where it really is about you and the trainer and what does it matter that your face is purple and you're sweating everywhere. You'll soon see I am speaking from experience here.
After a brief chat about my ambitions of personal training and a quick overview of my current gym routine Andy started putting me through my paces. He clearly had no intention of going easy on me since I'd admitted to starting a personal training course in February next year.
So first things first he assessed my cardio abilities and by the end I wasn't quite the chatterbox I'd started as. Then Andy told me he was going to do the same circuit he does with all clients who walk through the door for the first time... not remotely terrifying!
The circuit consisted of push ups, mountain climbers, squats, walking lunges across the gym and step-ups. With a minute break in between, Andy uses this to assess where your strengths and weaknesses are as a starting point and essentially you keep going until you're curled up into a ball on the floor. He'd already told me the average was 3 so the competitive nature in me clearly wasn't going to allow me to stop until I'd managed 4 rounds. Ouch.
After this we worked on core strength and activation which was really interesting. I definitely have some work to do in this area!
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Pro Balance, Andy is a stupidly nice down to earth guy who yet somehow still manages to get the absolute most out of you.
If you're interested in checking the place out give them a call on 0161 833 4777 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
