So I was idly scrolling through my Twitter about a week ago when I saw that Jonathan Goodman @Jon_PTDC had posted about Headspace @Headspace an app that provides guided meditation sessions and mindfulness training. I’m not going to lie I was sceptical to say the least, I have attempted meditation in the past and failed miserably. To say I have a busy mind is an understatement.
I did a little blog of my week, here is how it went...
So I decided to start the app tonight, I’ve been revising all day for my PT course which tires me out mentally as it is. You know what, this thing is easier than I thought it was going to be. The only mistake I made was lying down in bed to do it, you really need to be sat upright otherwise his voice prompts don’t make much sense. I don’t find the guys voice annoying in the slightest and you know what I slept really well. Maybe a fluke…
I enjoyed the app again tonight, I’m still finding the guy talking to me really soothing. Sitting upright is definitely the way to go, it helps with following his voice prompts. Tonight I really liked the idea that it wasn’t about shutting out or focusing on noises, that it was really about allowing them to be there.
So tonight I was really tired, I’d go so far as to say I was too tired to fully engage with it if I’m honest. However, I did it, after all it was only 10 minutes before bed. Not sure how much I got into it though.
So tonight I was all of the tired, this is the one I’ve struggled with the most concentration wise so far this week. My mind ended up wandering to really random stuff like birthday parties years ago which really didn’t help. I was also home alone so the ‘listening to the sounds around you’ part was like waiting for a pin to drop somewhere or my neighbours to come home. However, I fell asleep in a Nano-second, maybe this is working?
Ok ok, I hold my hands up… I skipped it tonight, I may have participated in a glass of two of wine this evening. The blog is called WeightsandWine though so you know…
Now this was hard going, tonight my neighbours decided to have one heck of a domestic in their bathroom which just so happens to be next to my bedroom. It did mean though I had lots of sounds to be listening to, not sure how helpful that was mind. Still finding the 10 minutes pretty easy and quite enjoying this routine every night before bed.
Home alone again tonight, slept really really well. I definitely didn’t think I would be finding this so easy, counting your breaths in and out to 10 and starting again is the best thing for keeping my mind on track. I’m almost struggling more with the concept of letting my mind wander and do whatever it wants, it then sort of panics and tries not to think of anything. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it.
So how was my week of Headspace?
You know what, I really enjoyed it. I can safely say the routine helped me sleep better and I think 10 minutes is completely reasonable amount of time to find in a day just to have a bit of me time. I wouldn’t say it was easy but I think what they ask of you in terms of focus, concentrating on breaths and feeling the weight of your body is really straight forward for everyone to follow.
Funnily enough I called my mum part way through the week to rave about how good it was and suggested it to her, turns out she already had it!
