For anybody who’s followed me for a while you’ll know that I don’t say an awful lot about weight loss. I genuinely believe that exercise and good nutrition is about living a healthy and happy life and not about getting into smaller clothes or weighing less.
Most people, however, are still desperately looking for the best way to lose weight. I am not completely exempt from this.
Diet culture has made us incredibly self-conscious and I can’t blame anybody for feeling that weight loss would make them happy. I once truly believed this. I put my future happiness on a flat stomach and getting myself into a size 8, it was the sole reason I went to the gym.
What I want to show you in this blog post is how your mind and body work together. They are completely in sync and if you change your mindset it can have a huge impact on your body too. I know from working with clients that when they feel good about themselves and their bodies, they are more inclined to move and exercise and because of that they lose weight.
I’m going to give you my 10 easy steps to help you feel happier and because of that, potentially lose weight.
1) Stop punishing your body with diets and exercise. When you do this, you’re creating negative associations with food and exercise that can be potentially dangerous. You’re much less likely to lose weight if you treat food like it’s bad and exercise like its punishment. Already feel like you hate exercise. Don’t stress, I did a post on how to get fit when you hate exercise.
2) Reward your body with a treat that isn’t food. It is so easy to make food the go-to reward for going to the gym or taking the stairs, but this sabotages all your efforts. Book yourself a massage or buy some new underwear. Show your body that you love it in different ways.
3) Treat food as fuel. Your body needs delicious and nutritious food to work at it’s very best. Remove the good and bad notions and think of food as calories that help keep your boy going throughout the day.
4) Talk better to yourself. You can’t expect anybody else to make you feel good about you. I have been guilty of this in the past and relied on external validation to fell better about myself. Own that responsibility and start speaking to yourself the way you do your best mate, lift yourself up for a change. I wrote all about self-sabotage and how you are standing in your own way here.
5) Get support. Never underestimate a decent support network to help keep you on track on the days when everything feels a bit “meh”
6) Write down 3 things you like about your body every day. Force your brain to focus on the good instead of picking out your flaws all the time. Remind yourself how flipping great your body is.
7) Start small and build big. Don’t over face yourself with a tonne of new behaviour’s and challenges that are completely unmanageable in your daily life.
8) Check in with how you’re feeling. If you hit a slump, feel yourself reverting to old ways and bad habits, keep a note of it. It will help you spot when you’re heading off track and keep you accountable to yourself.
9) Do it for you. Nobody else. This is your body and wasting a lifetime being hateful of it isn’t going to get you anywhere.
10) Challenge yourself. Try something new, a new class, workout or sign yourself up to something that forces you to come out of your comfort zone. When we force ourselves to leave the safety bubble of habit and routine we grow. There is no better way to prove to yourself just what your body can do than by giving it a challenge to throw itself into.
Now those might not have been the 10 steps you were looking for but maybe I have challenged you to think a little bit differently about why you really want to lose weight and show you that maybe there are other ways you can change how you feel about yourself.
Know that you are more than a number on the scales or a clothing size. You have so much more to give the world. Your weight does not define who you are.
